Turn “smooth” into a finish expectation

A shared reference, agreed light and a written scope make appearance easier to discuss.

Planning guide · reviewed 12 October 2026

Use a reference with context

Smooth can mean different things to a homeowner and finisher. Bring a photograph or point to a surface you like, then discuss the difference in substrate and lighting. A photograph helps communication but does not promise an identical result. Ask what any finish terminology means within this specific scope and what limitations the contractor identifies.

Ask where treatment stops

Localized smoothing can create a visible transition into existing texture. Ask whether work covers a patch, a wall, all walls or the ceiling. Include corners, openings and trim edges in the discussion. If a finish level is named, request the relevant specification and its decorating assumptions. A label alone does not describe preparation, paint or the full agreement.

Agree on review conditions

Decide when and how the surface is reviewed, including whether it happens before primer or after painting. Use intended room lighting and viewing positions. Record how concerns are addressed. A written appearance expectation gives both parties a practical conversation and avoids an unsupported guarantee of an invisible or flawless finish. Keep the reference and agreement together for handover.

Keep these questions with your notes

  • Discuss a reference and its limits.
  • Name every included surface.
  • Agree on review conditions in advance.
